ABOUT THE COURSE

OVERVIEW

An explosion of new diagnostic methodologies such as molecular and genomic testing, adjunctive visual aids, cytology, and salivary diagnostics are being actively marketed to the dental professional, or will be so in the future. The products are often promoted as advanced “must have” products for the contemporary dental practice. This presentation is to compare and contrast marketing claims against available evidence.

OBJECTIVES

  • Discuss and understand the pros and cons go universal screening for OPC
  • Discuss contemporary research addressing the use adjunctive caner diagnostic aids
  • Discuss and understand the meaning of FDA clearance

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

MICHAELL A. HUBER, D.D.S., received his dental degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Dental School in 1980. He continued with postgraduate training in Oral Medicine and Maxillofacial Radiology at the National Naval Dental Center, Bethesda, Maryland in 1986 and received a Certificate in Oral Medicine in 1988. Upon his retirement from the United States Navy in 2002, Dr. Huber joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Oral Medicine, Department of Dental Diagnostic Science at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Dental School.
He has been teaching both pre-doctoral and graduate dental students at the Health Science Center, and is an active participant in the Dental School's Tertiary Care Oral Medicine Clinic. His current research activities include evaluating novel diagnostic techniques for the early detection of oral cancer.
Dr. Huber is certified by the American Board of Oral Medicine and holds memberships to the American Academy of Oral Medicine and the American Dental Association. He has many other professional affiliations, and over the past 22 years, he has held numerous positions in professional organizations. Dr. Huber has accepted invitations to lecture before many local, state, and national professional organizations.
As an officer of the Dental Corps in the United States Navy, Dr. Huber's assignments have included numerous ships and shore stations. At Norfolk, Virginia, he served as Force Dental Officer, Commander of the Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet; Command Consultant in Oral Medicine and Radiology at the Naval Dental Center; and Head of Oral Diagnosis/Central Sterilization Department, Naval Base Branch Dental Clinic.
